Newseum — Worth paying for entry

Living in the nation’s Capital, we know there are a plethora of Smithsonian museums available for free entry. You know the heavyweights of this ilk - Air & Space, National Museum of History, National Gallery of Art, Afro-American History Museum, Holocaust Museum and more. But there are many other museums in the metropolitan area worth checking out, even when they require payment for entry. Today I am highlighting one of the pay-for-entry museums, the Newseum.

Located next to the Canadian embassy and across the street from the National Gallery of Art at 555 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W., the Newseum is dedicated to the First Amendment (specifically the freedom of the press) and the importance and history of news1. This is one of the more interactive museums, so this is a great place for the curious to go and explore. As a realtor who is also a photographer, I am particularly fond of the Pulitzer Prize Photographs Gallery, which displays photos going back to the beginning entries in 19422. There are often special events at the Newseum. For example, I attended a panel discussion about news that included American journalist, anchorman, and television host Nick Clooney, whom some of you may know as actor George Clooney’s father. You can also hold your wedding there if you choose; I attended a friend’s wedding there years ago immediately after getting my eyes dilated as part of a vision exam. I was nearly blind as the wedding was outdoors on a balcony on a beautiful sunny day. My advice is to avoid eye dilation before important events and activities as a general rule.

Tickets for adults are $24.95 ($19.95 for seniors, $14.95 for youths between 7-18, and children 6 and younger enter for free). Tickets can be used again for free the next day, a great deal if you want to spread the experience out. The Newseum. Worth the price of admission.
