H St Corridor — NE Washington DC's not-so-hidden gem

There are several neighborhoods in the greater Washington DC metro area I am fond of, but there is only one #1 on my list of favorites — the H St NE corridor, also known as the Atlas District.

H St., for me, is an attractive combination of three primary things I value — restaurants, eclectic people, proximity to other neighborhoods in DC

What defines a neighborhood are sometimes physical characteristics - a type of architecture, rivers, lakes, streams, running through them, historic landmarks, sometimes proximity to other places, sometimes the businesses found within it - large entertainment venues, clubs, shopping, and occasionally just a general personality comprises a neighborhood.

H St., for me, is an attractive combination of three primary things I value — restaurants, eclectic people, proximity to other neighborhoods in DC with quick escape routes via easily accessible highways to Baltimore, Northern Virginia, and Annapolis (& don’t forget Ocean City during the summer!). Near to Gallaudet University and Trinidad to the north and east, NOMA to the west, and Eastern Market to the south, H St. is the definition of accessible. An excellent selection of restaurants, bars, grocery stores and shops can be found along the corridor - Sticky Rice, Dangerously Delicious Pies, Granville Moore’s, Sol Mexican Restaurant, Rock and Roll Hotel, Whole Foods, Giant Foods, and much more within a walkable area. Hop the DC Streetcar to Union Station for a train around town via the Metro’s Redline or as a gateway to anywhere via Amtrak or MARC.

Do you like day trips? Living along the H St. Corridor can shave as many as 20 minutes each way (40 minutes round trip) from the driving time to Annapolis, Baltimore, and Ocean City compared to living in Petworth, Columbia Heights, Georgetown and Dupont Circle.

Does this sound like a neighborhood that fits you? If you have not checked out the H St. NE Corridor yet, head to one of the places mentioned here or search for a food genre you like in Yelp in the neighborhood.
